Perhaps someone with a different mindset would have seen the opportunity to get out whilst they could. Made a run for it and found a job in a regular, human company so that she could live out her time in the corporate world in peace. But Cora wasn’t like that. She liked a challenge. She loved diversity. And she lived to deliver the best someone expected of her. It wasn’t in her nature to flee any more than it was to stagnate. She’d do what she could to maintain the relations between the races from where she was, and perhaps in time make a difference on a bigger scale. She’d grown loyal to Mara, and by default, was now loyal to they Wyr.
Cora smiled in response to Alexander, appreciating the change in his features that suggested she’d done well enough for him to acknowledge. It gave her a brief flicker of pride, to know that even if she held little of substance for them to use in this room, she was still of benefit to the cause as a whole. She didn’t want to see this escalate beyond where it was already. For one, it put her in a dangerous position, because guilt by association was just as bad to many who were geared for a takedown. But also, it was bad for business on the whole. If tensions became too fraught, that humans wouldn’t do business with Wyr, it left her with a whole heap of difficulty, again by association.
It was as if thinking about the association somehow prompted the Wyr to intensify the connection, when he suggested she replace Matt on the Ryder case. She snapped her attention to him and listened as he barked commands to the rest of them around the table. Her hackles raised in an instant as he planned out her life in the short term for her. She made to argue, but heads swivelled and affirmations were nodded, and before Cora could take a breath, she had a security detail, the naked man-cat, and suddenly was living all cosy in Grey Castle.
She had to interject, had to voice her displeasure at it, but nothing much came out. She was curious, perhaps too curious, to see what life in this place would be like, but her home, her independence, her sanity were being compromised by forcing her to stay here, mostly against her will, and she wasn’t enough of a key player for any of this to seem necessary.
“I’m sorry, but may I interject from a human perspective here?” She spread her hands and tried her best to sound convincing.
“I have a home, on the other side of the city, that is where I’m comfortable, and safe. To leave me here when I’m clearly not quite so accustomed to some of the…” she glanced at Jake, “mannerisms of the Wyr isn’t what’s best for me. I’m not in danger here, but I’m certainly conspicuous.” She leaned forward and became more animated as she continued.
“I’m not saying that you have anyone here to worry about, but the fact is that as soon as I’m more associated with the Wyr than I already am, that’s when I might become a target.”
She paused then.
Ah. Maybe he could hear her thoughts earlier. Maybe she was going to be bait. She huffed a small laugh to herself and nodded in acknowledgement. The stakes certainly had increased now, and a peculiar confidence warmed her. Almost like she felt like one of the boys around a poker table. “Perhaps you’d be better assigning someone as an assistant to the case, and let me go right back into talks with Maynard directly.” Hell, if she was going into a trap, she’d go for the biggest prize before it sprung on her.
“And Jake,” she smiled coolly, “if you get white hair on any of my stuff, you won’t want to walk around naked for a long time.”
She stood with the rest of them, ready to leave, but still not entirely happy with the situation. She wanted to go home. She wanted her own bed and her own kitchen, and her clothes. She eyed Jacob, tilted her head ever so slightly as she studied him making his exit. He seemed overly eager to be assigned to her, and she couldn’t decide if she was suspicious or intrigued, or had someone she could use to help her acclimatise. She’d find out, she supposed. She glanced back at The Boss and Jitters.
This wasn’t going to be close to her last meeting with Alexander. If he wanted to use her as bait, she’d make sure she got something out of the deal.
